Dr. Kathleen Clark

Dr. Clark graduated from Indiana University School of Optometry in 1977. Drs. Clark and Covert established Family Vision Care in Charlottesville in 1979. Dr.. Clark moved back to her home state of Michigan in 1996. She worked at the Livingston Developmental Academy and Excel Institute vision clinics. In 1998, she spent 6 months teaching at the optometry school in Auckland, New Zealand. Dr. Clark returned to Charlottesville in 1999 rejoining Family Vision Care. In 2004, she married Dr. Greg Gelburd, an osteopathic family physician with Downtown Family Health Care. Their combined family of 5 girls brings them much joy.

In addition to her general adult practice, Dr. Clark enjoys working with children and infants. She evaluates, consults and treats patients with learning difficulties, autism, head injury, stroke, strabismus, convergence insufficiency, and computer stress syndrome.

Dr. Clark goes on medical missions trips around the world. She has been to the Gulf Coast twice with RAM, travels to Honduras each year with her church and has been to Haiti several times. During the mission week she will see approximately 300 patients. We give out prescription glasses, readers, sunglasses and eye medications all generously donated from groups like the Lions Club. “It is so rewarding to watch a persons face light up when they can see!”

Dr. Christopher Covert

Born and raised on the flat lands among the wheat fields of central Indiana, Dr. Covert earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Miami University of Oxford, Ohio in 1972. His Doctorate in Optometry was completed at Indiana University in May 1977. The fall of 1979 introduced the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and the great town of Charlottesville, Virginia to the brand new practice of Dr’s Clark and Covert.

For nearly three decades, not only has Charlottesville grown and evolved so has the profession of optometry. Embracing and incorporating the latest of cutting edge medical technologies, advancements and techniques in the ophthalmic field including LASIK, retinal photography, computer aided refraction, glaucoma treatments, advances in pharmacology, spectacle lens designs and materials and contact lens materials, Dr. Covert has met the challenge of remaining open to and abreast of these developments to provide his patients with the best vision care and vision correction.

Known for his detailed, tenacious, no-nonsense and caring style of health care delivery, Dr. Covert continues to welcome not only his established patients, but new patients as well.

Dr. Susan Mueller

Dr. Mueller is a native of scenic northwest New Jersey. After graduating from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania with a Biology degree, she worked for a large pharmaceutical company as a microbiologist. After realizing that research was not her calling, she returned to school to become an optometrist. Dr. Mueller graduated from Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia in 1989. She then completed a residency in ocular disease at Lyons Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in New Jersey in 1990.

Dr. Mueller and her husband, Bill, moved to Charlottesville in 1990 for Bill to pursue a Master’s degree in landscape architecture at University of Virginia. Dr. Mueller worked for two years in Staunton, then joined Dr. Clark and Covert in practice in 1992. Dr. Mueller and her husband have two daughters. She currently works part-time in the office and full-time at home where she homeschools her children.

Dr. Mueller believes in using the gifts and talents given to her for the benefit of others.   She performs eye exams free of cost for patients referred from the Charlottesville Free Clinic and Vision USA. She volunteers with Remote Area Medical (RAM) and makes an annual trek to Wise County for a three-day medical mission where the vision clinic performs free exams for up to two thousand patients from surrounding states. Dr. Mueller also greatly enjoys her time working in a family practice where she can help patients of all ages with their varying visual needs, in addition to keeping up with her interest of diagnosing and treating ocular disease.
